- 01
What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is how often, and how well, AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity name your business when someone asks them a relevant question. Unlike a search ranking you can look up, it is invisible by default. You only know you are missing when the customer never arrives.
- 02
Is AI visibility the same as SEO?
No. SEO is about being indexed and ranked in a list of links. AI visibility is about being recommended in a single answer. SEO rewards your own website. AI recommendation is decided mostly by third-party sources, directories, reviews and listicles, that the assistant already trusts. The skills overlap, but the playbook is different.
- 03
What is AEO or GEO?
AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) are newer names for the same goal. Getting recommended by AI assistants rather than just ranked by search engines. Both describe optimising for the single answer an assistant gives, not the ten links a search engine returns.
- 04
How do AI assistants decide which business to recommend?
They build an answer from sources across the web, and those sources are overwhelmingly third-party. In a 2026 scan of 36 Northern Irish businesses, assistants drew on 2,471 different sources, almost all directories, review platforms and listicles. Your own website plays a surprisingly small role.
- 05
Can I control what AI says about my business?
Not directly. You cannot edit the answer. But you can strongly influence it by shaping the inputs. Getting listed and reviewed where assistants look, keeping your details consistent everywhere, and earning third-party mentions. Influence the sources and you influence the answer.
- 06
Does my website matter for AI visibility?
Less than you would expect for being recommended, more than you would expect for being described accurately. Assistants rarely choose you because of your homepage, but they do use it to get your facts right once you are named. So your site matters. It is just not the lever that gets you on the shortlist.
- 07
How do I get recommended by ChatGPT?
Get cited where ChatGPT looks. That means strong, consistent listings in the directories and review platforms relevant to your sector, third-party mentions and round-ups, and accurate details everywhere your business appears. There is no setting to toggle. It is earned through your footprint on the wider web.
- 08
Which AI assistant matters most?
There is not one. In the 2026 NI scan, the four major assistants agreed on whether to mention a business only about two-thirds of the time. Gemini recommended businesses most often at 25%. ChatGPT least at 15.6%. A strategy that wins one can leave you invisible on the others, so you have to look across all four.
- 09
Does AI get business details wrong?
Rarely. When assistants named a business, they described it accurately about ~99% of the time. The far bigger risk is not a wrong detail. It is being left out of the answer entirely. Worth checking once, worth tracking over time, but rarely the headline problem.
- 10
How often does AI visibility change?
Often enough to monitor. Assistants update their models and sources regularly, and your footprint changes as listings, reviews and mentions accumulate. A one-off check tells you where you stand today. Tracking tells you whether you are gaining or slipping.
- 11
How can I check my own AI visibility?
Run your business across the major assistants and see what they say. Level44 offers a free check that does exactly that. No card, no call. It runs your name across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, then returns a short report on whether you appear, where you rank when you do, and which sources the assistants leaned on. Top-three placement is the goal: 82.2% of appearances landed there in the NI scan.

The vocabulary, briefly defined.
The terms you will see across the rest of this content set, and what they mean in plain English.
- AI visibility
- How often and how well AI assistants recommend your business in their answers.
- Answer engine
- An AI assistant (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity) that returns a single synthesised answer rather than a list of links.
- AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation)
- Optimising to be recommended by answer engines.
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation)
- Another term for the same goal, optimising for AI-generated answers.
- Cold question
- A query where the customer does not name a specific business (“best accountant in Belfast”). The hardest and most important test of visibility.
- Citation / source
- A web page an assistant draws on to build its answer. Mostly third-party for business recommendations.
- Presence
- Whether a business appears in an answer at all.
- Position / rank
- Where a business sits in an assistant’s shortlist. In the NI scan, 82.2% of appearances were top-3.
- Sentiment
- The tone an assistant uses about a business. Most are described neutrally, not warmly.
- Hallucination
- A confident but false claim. Rare for NI business details in the scan (~99% accurate), but worth checking.
See where you stand.
The free check runs your business across the four major assistants the same way we ran the 36 in the scan, and shows you what they say, and don't. No card, no call. Just the answer.
